Pursuant to the foreign trade regulations of the Republic of Serbia, the goods exported, imported, transiting or undergoing a customs procedure must meet sanitary, veterinary and phytosanitary requirements, as laid down in the regulations.

Conditions for conducting the abovementioned controls may not impose further restrictions to export, import or transit.

In May 2009, new laws governing this area were adopted: Veterinary Law, Law on Food Safety, and Law on Plant Health. These laws and relevant implementing regulations, inter alia, govern the methods of conducting sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary controls related to importing, exporting and transit of goods.
